About this mod
This mod adds Mario as a new Skin for Batman. Has some Gameplay issues because I edited the Bones to have proportions. Hopefully can be fixed in the future.
- Permissions and credits
Have you ever wanted to play a Batman game as Mario? Probably not but this is what I typically do when modding games. lol
Anyways, Mario's model is from Super Mario Odyssey but with various edits to better fit Arkham Knight's Artstyle like utilizing the game's "Micro Bump Map" feature to have more detailed Fabric and Skin Textures.
Mario has accurate proportions which works surprisingly well during Combat, I didn't notice any issues regarding the Hitboxes. Mario will visually clip through Objects & Characters during animations but he won't actually clip through anything so don't worry about falling through a Floor or going through a Wall.
Because of how the characters are animated in this game, I had to overhaul Mario's Eyes & Eyelids to work properly which did result in some wonky movement due to being designed differently. Looks fine for the most part, but it looks awful whenever Mario is looking off to the side because the Eyelids will also rotate alongside the Eyes. O_o
Mario can remove his Cap whenever Batman removes his Cowl, it looks really silly but works. If you're familiar with Mario's design then you'll notice that his Hair is a bit squished, that's because it's always visible. Batman's Hair doesn't simply appear & disappear during Cutscenes, it's actually a separate model that gets spawned. This model is actually shared between all Batman Skins, so editing it for Mario wasn't an option.
I have no plans to make this mod for any of the other Batman: Arkham games, feel free to backport it yourself but please Credit me if you release it.
Preferably with a Credits.txt similar to the one that's included in this mod.
INSTALLING THE MOD:
Place the "Mario" folder inside any numbered folder located in "SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Batman Arkham Knight\DLC\"
I recommend "418930" (Dark Knight 2008 Skin) because it's the last one which means the files will be loaded after everything else. Useful info if making a mod that replaces a file instead of adding a new one.
That's it, Mario should appear alongside the rest of the Skins in the Showcase Menu.
If you don't have any of the DLCs, recreating the folder path might work? It worked for me but that could be because I already own all of them. I just know that you can't simply add a new DLC folder, it has to use one of the official names.
KNOWN ISSUES:
Known Issues #1 & #2: In order to keep his proportions, Mario's Bones have been edited to be in different positions. For the most part this works flawlessly but occasionally the Bones will revert back to their original positions, basically making Mario become "Batman-Sized"
It's actually less common than you'd think but definitely needed to be mentioned. Look at the Picture with "Known Issue #1" for a good idea of what I mean.
While not all of the time, Mario will sometimes go "Batman-Sized" when ragdolling. Seems to happen more often when killed by bullets, seen in the Picture with "Known Issue #2"
On a similar note, Mario having a huge Head causes some issues. Besides the Camera sometimes going inside his Head during Cutscenes, certain puzzles in the game become hard to play or basically impossible to beat thanks to Mario covering the screen.
I have done a full playthough the Game's Story as well as every Side Mission except for The Riddler in order to see what can & cannot be done using this mod. I do not have the patience or care enough to go through all of the Riddler Trophies but I did complete the actual Side Mission, and then downloaded a save file to fight Riddler himself.
Besides the following things, everything can be done as Mario:
Known Issue #3: The Remote Hacking Device can not be seen due to Mario's arms being much shorter than Batman's, you will have to use Sound Cues in order to complete the puzzles. If playing with a Controller, the Rumble Feature makes this easier.
Known Issue #4: Reconstructing Stagg's Fingerprints can not be completed unless you have memorized the Camera Footage like a speedrunner. Mario covers 95% of the screen and the only Sound Cue is you scrolling through the footage. The gameplay mechanics themselves work correctly, you just can't see anything. Just go ahead and switch to a regular Batman Skin for this section and then switch back after the next Autosave, sadly there is no Autosave after clearing out the room so you actually need to do the Stealth Section as Batman before you can access the Camera Footage.
The other instances of scrolling through Camera Footage in the game are beatable as Mario doesn't cover the whole thing, it's just this one. (Unless there's a Riddler puzzle that uses this mechanic in which case idk)
Known Issue #5: The Voice Synthesizer can not be seen due to Mario's arms being much shorter than Batman's, you will have to use Sound Cues in order to complete the puzzles. This one isn't that difficult since you are literally messing around with a voice clip.
Known Issue #6: Car Puzzle for the Mad Hatter Side Mission has the same problem where the RHD's Screen is hidden, requiring you to use Sound Cues. However it's basically impossible after the First Puzzle because the timing is way stricter, and the dots you need to highlight randomly appear & disappear. Technically possible if you have amazing RNG but it's faster & less frustrating to just switch to a regular Batman Skin.
